Located in the San Juan Islands, the Boathouse stands foremost as a threshold between water and land, an idea it embraces literally by providing upland access to those arriving by boat or seaplane, and figuratively through its location and form. It straddles the elements, providing an entryway as well as a dramatic spot for a morning cup of coffee or a crab boil with the extended family. Val-des-Monts is a municipality in the Outaouais region of Quebec, Canada. Tucked away within these mountainous forests, along the edge of a lake sits the Val-des-Monts Boathouse. The boathouse was designed with materials that draw connections to the surrounding site, emphasizing natural elements that strategically blend and pop within the enclosing environment. The approach was to create optimal views that emphasize the surrounding landscape, the boathouse was intentionally placed to maximize these views. The windows frame incredible sunsets and capture intimate moments of the passing seasons. The starting point was a boathouse in a’ local traditional (‘stavline’) construction dating from around 1750. Much of this was rotted and large parts of the structure had to be amputated. The original construction was supplemented by timber from a pig barn (who had previously been a church), as well as materials from a nearby pier.   It is for this reason countless markings from earlier constructions in the reused timber. The rest were cut and sawed, including two new combined-knee-and-post for carrying and 32 smaller knees for wind suction. Hooked is a casual fish and chip seafood restaurant and bar in the newly renovated Found 158 complex in Shanghai. The interior is relaxed and playful with fresh white furniture and white washed timber plank finishes. Tropical wallpaper and aqua blue add fun pops of colour throughout the space. The space is accented with some marine-themed elements- boat cleats and rope  - with a boathouse row feature wall. The bar references the inside of a boat shed with exposed framing and a weatherboard clad bar front. Nestled on a hill overlooking the picturesque Tamar River, this quaint twobedroom home rests perfectly on newly formed contours.   The owner of the Boathouse leads a busy and globe-trotting lifestyle which has seen him stay in many wonderful hotels and resorts. His brief was that he wanted a “hotel feel” accommodation where he could entertain friends from Overseas and the Mainland. The double garage houses the owners special-interest cars which he plans to tour Tasmania in.   We, the designers (and builders) wanted to pay tribute to the history of this land we were designing on. Located in Muskoka, Ontario, the Bridge House overlooks the south end of Lake Joseph, one of three large lakes in the region.  The house is located on a rock outcrop overlooking the lake and the boathouse, and breaks the mould of faux-traditional architecture typical of the region.  The program was developed for a couple who enjoy entertaining, so there are three bedrooms in the main building, with an additional bedroom in the boathouse. The boathouse on Kawagama Lake includes a dry slip boat storage via marine railway, and a 42 sq.m. dwelling space above accessed by a small bridge structure which spans the native topography. The project included the dismantling of an existing structure and creation of this new steel frame building and the adjacent outdoor living features.The site is accessible only by water and therefore the design was highly influenced by the practicality of the construction process. The former grounds of the GDR water police in the south of the Plänterwald in Berlin-Treptow were found as a fallow land with mainly dilapidated buildings. Fascinated by the morbid presence of the abandoned industrial site, it was decided to underline its condition by an architectural and artistic reappropriation, resulting in the transformation of the main building of the former shipyard into a real ruin. Poised on riprap overlooking the water, the new boathouse sits along the Pier 5 Uplands of Brooklyn Bridge Park. Providing secure open-air boat storage at grade level, with a multipurpose room and public restrooms safely above floodwaters on the upper floor, the architecture of the 5,000 sf boathouse is purposeful, economical and resilient.   Designed with a new maintenance and operations building on the opposite end of the site, both new buildings were developed concurrently with the landscape of the Pier 5 Uplands. The first three cabins of a planned community of 40 on Bigwin Island sit nestled among maple, pine and ash trees. The sweeping view they enjoy, down to the golf course and the lake beyond, is courtesy of the island’s deer: the grazing line under the trees, a swath of open air through the greenery, influenced the siting of the buildings and their emphasis on transparency between roof and floor, and earth and sky. This project for the renovation of an existing boathouse and new 600 sq.ft. second storey guest suite is located in the Muskoka Lakes region of Ontario. Situated at the end of a narrow bay, the design of the new boathouse mediates between extended views out to the wide vista of the distant lake and the immediacy of the enclosed forested shoreline of the bay. The design provides a lens for these varied views as well as a sheltering foil to the open lake breezes and water traffic. Riverfront Park is located on the HIllsborough River and is the centerpiece of the city's West Tampa Plan.West Tampa is a historic neighborhood once known as Robert City, the center of African-American living, jobs and culture prior to urban renewal. In the 60's the neighborhood was cut off by a freeway and the core of Robert City was demolished to build this park.
