The Foscarini Aplomb pendant lamp is a design by Lucidi e Pevere. Introduced in 2010, it is the first in a series of beautiful lamps. Crafted from cement, the makers successfully achieved an elegant and slender shape using traditional concrete processing. The lamp's finely structured surface feels pleasant to the touch, and its material and shape give it a confident appearance, as reflected in its name. The Aplomb pendant lamp by Foscarini is a revolutionary model that utilizes visible concrete as part of the language of modern architecture with innovative spirit and technology. The Aplomb Pendant Lamp provides soft but bright light, making it a versatile lighting option.

Caption

This pendant lamp creates direct and precise lighting on the surface below. Its design allows for it to be hung above a coffee table, in a line, or a cluster at varying heights. There is also an option with a 10m cable length for high voids. Foscarini also provides ceiling plates that enable multiple pendant lights to be combined into a cluster.

Design history

This lamp represents a remarkable leap in scale, from large-scale architecture to a small suspension light for interiors. It exudes an elegant and simple product with a formal and simple shape, inspired by the material traditionally linked to the world of construction. This inspiration is reflected in its name "Aplomb," which refers to a plumb-bob used by masons and also means 'self-possessed, confident' in French, representing the lamp's departure from aseptic minimalism with the material richness of concrete.

Sizes

The Aplomb pendant lamp is available in multiple sizes, with a 17 cm diameter for this particular one. Developing Aplomb presented a significant challenge in combining the need for extremely reduced dimensions and thickness, detailed finishes, and smooth surfaces with the characteristics of concrete. This was achieved through the use of a special amalgam, which is fluid in the mold and produces a surface that appears rough but feels refined to the touch due to a layer of transparent finish.

Features

The lamp features a light design with the characteristic shape of an upside-down funnel, which offsets the solid nature of concrete while highlighting its unique material aspect. Aplomb provides precise, direct lighting, making it ideal for tables, peninsulas, or counters, whether used alone or in composition.

Materials and colors

In technical terms, Aplomb is a hanging lamp made of concrete diffuser and aluminum, available in a grey, white, or brown diffuser with a black or white vertical rod. The lamp has a diameter of 16.5 centimeters and a standard height of 35.5 centimeters. It can be extended to a maximum height of 200 centimeters. The lamp requires one 60-watt halogen bulb with a G9 base.

Reference projects

M12

The project involves the renovation of a 90 sqm, two-story apartment in a historic building. The goal is to transform the space into a modern and functional home while preserving its original character. Key elements of the renovation include open-plan living, custom storage, attic transformation, and preservation of original features. The Foscarini Aplomb pendant is considered for this project due to its clean lines and modern aesthetic, which could complement the building's historic character while adding a contemporary touch, by hanging it over the kitchen island, illuminating the dining area, and creating different lighting effects in the attic space.

Goofy House

The Goofy House project transformed a small 50 sqm dwelling in Rome into a vibrant and functional home for a young creative individual. The renovation focused on optimizing space utilization and creating a flexible, open-plan layout. Key elements include a custom-designed storage solution, a multifunctional table, and a harmonious blend of personal belongings and design objects. The overall goal was to create a space that reflects the homeowner's personality and lifestyle. The Foscarini Aplomb pendant is a suitable choice for the Goofy House due to its contemporary design and versatility.

Alte Kelter

The Alte Kelter project involved the restoration and repurposing of a 14th-century wine press building into a modern, multi-functional space. The renovation focused on preserving the building's historical character while incorporating contemporary elements to create a versatile venue for both corporate and public events. The Foscarini Aplomb pendant is the right choice for the Alte Kelter due to its contemporary design and ability to complement both modern and historic spaces.

A cluster of Aplomb pendants suspended over the gallery area creates a striking visual focal point and provides ambient lighting for the lounge.  The pendant's versatility allows for various configurations to suit different event setups, from intimate gatherings to large-scale functions. The Aplomb's concrete material creates an interesting contrast with the building's historic timber elements, while its clean lines complement the modern glass and concrete elements of the renovation.
