Astolfo, the fearless knight main character of bizarre adventures in the Orlando Furioso, took off with his golden spear towards memorable endeavours. From his name (“ast-ulf”, which most likely meaning is “savior spear”) derives the new Lumen Center Italia lamp: a spear of light, slim and technological, mechanically inserted into a hardwood trunk, rich in coarseness, that has been recycled from old buildings' dismissed beams. A thin aluminum section with LED light sources, freestanding from the wood trunk, can be lodged on its support in many ways, hinting at the different lighting uses. Thanks to the trunk's neat and precise cuts indeed, the luminous spear can be inserted according to three different angles and orientations. In this way, a tabletop can be lightened up by adjusting the light parallel to the surface, or a 108° insertion will lighten more widely a location, or again with an even more vertical inclination you'll take advantage of a wall as a reflector and indirectly lighten the surroundings. On the back of the trunk there's one more line of light, aligned with the wood surface, so that it generates a pleasant indirect light. Both light lines can be independently controlled by means of two switches, on top of the wooden trunk, that allow to dimmer the light. The ancestral and comforting structure of the wood contrasts with the extreme technology of the LED source and of the minimal section bar, in a functional and sensory combination that originates in the past and projects into the future.
