Hans J. Wegner possessed a rare ability to unite aesthetics, function and comfort – a talent clearly evident in this set of sculptural furniture the world-famous Danish architect and designer first introduced in 1952. The CH71 lounge chair and CH72 two-seater sofa, which have not been in production since the late 1970s, now join the Carl Hansen & Son collection.
Organic expression and superb craftsmanship are hallmarks of Hans J. Wegner’s furniture. Wegner also had a special sense for designing and developing furniture pieces that were at once contemporary – and possessed the potential to become timeless classics. A good example is Wegner’s sculptural CH71 lounge chair, which was first presented at the Danish Furniture Design exhibition at the renowned Copenhagen department store, Magasin du Nord, in 1952. Carl Hansen & Son is now adding the light, relaxed lounge chair, as well as the corresponding two-seater CH72 sofa, to its comprehensive collection of classic designer furniture, fulfilling a long-standing dream of Carl Hansen & Son’s CEO Knud Erik Hansen,.
“The set complements our comprehensive collection of Wegner furniture in every respect, and is unique among the great Danish designer’s works – particularly in its dimensions,” explains Knud Erik Hansen. “Both the lounge chair and sofa speak to a very contemporary home trend that celebrates the compact residential property in large towns and cities, where space is often limited. Wegner succeeded in designing an elegant chair and matching sofa that take up little space, while offering a level of comfort normally associated with more voluminous furniture. The chair and sofa appear soft, organic and beautiful from all angles, making them easy to position anywhere.”
Both the CH71 and CH72 are characterised by relatively small dimensions, a slim, comfortable, fully upholstered frame, and round, tapered legs in solid wood. The furniture features loose cushions and upholstered armrests that are finished with elegant, rounded, solid wood handles – a functional and decorative detail that protects the armrests and makes lifting and moving the chair easy and convenient.
