The design objective for the deFUSE light was to create a lighting piece that suffuses large areas with a combination of diffused and directional light.
DeFUSE light is abstracted from a lattice of the Penrose base modules which can be found across intricate patterns used in the architecture of ancient Persia. The polyurethane piece is lit with linear LEDs spread across its top face. It also has 11 spot LEDs where its branches terminate. The design evolved from creating a polygonal division pattern on a rectangular region. The borders of the divisions provide the skeleton of a porous volume that will diffuse the light. Whilst the branches distribute the light on a planar surface, the differentiated sizes of voids add a subtle dynamism to the effect through the changing levels of light intensity. DeFuse will have a presence in any room, yet the slim design makes it suitable for spaces where views should not be interrupted across a room. It is available in black and white.
