RCL offers a new direction for lighting with the launch of the Director® DR8 MK2

London, United Kingdom, 1st May, 2014 — Remote Controlled Lighting (RCL), the only company in the world to specialise in the design and manufacture of high-quality remote controlled spotlights, has announced the Director® DR8 MK2, the next generation of remote controlled luminaire from the award-winning lighting specialists. Following on from the widely acclaimed DR8 MK1, the MK2 features bold new styling on the outside and has been completely reengineered on the inside, for a more compact design and increased versatility.

The DR8 MK2 is the latest product innovation from the company founded as a solution to the difficult and time-consuming problem of aiming spotlights mounted on high ceilings and other hard to reach areas. Nowhere is this issue more prevalent than in the double height spaces often associated with hospitality, museum and retail environments. In these settings, dramatic lighting can make all the difference but sending employees up ladders to adjust spotlights is a drama most organisations can do without. RCL developed an innovative solution that avoids the use of ladders altogether, and has seen thousands of its remote controlled lights installed worldwide.

RCL’s patented system is quick and easy to operate and avoids the costs, dangers and delays often encountered when using ladders, mechanical lifts or scaffolding. Using a simple, handheld controller, individual lights can be aimed and dimmed wirelessly, allowing non-technical staff to spotlight objects while keeping their feet securely on the floor. As well as reducing set-up time, RCL’s ‘Select & Direct’ system allows for versatile schemes, providing an adjustable light source in normally unreachable areas.

The Director® DR8 MK2 is available in a variety of mounting options and lamp choices – including LED, which is up to five times more efficient than the halogen equivalent – and has already been installed in the recently opened Qela Boutique in Doha, where it joins RCL’s popular fully-recessed luminaire, the Director® DR7. Both models can be operated using the same simple, laser controller or RCL’s award-winning iPad-based system, iDirect, released in 2013.

As part of RCL’s continuous development policy, the Director® DR8 has undergone a complete design and engineering overhaul. The MK2 incorporates all of the great features and benefits of the original DR8 luminaire but boasts increased glare control; slimmer, more compact looks and even greater mechanical reliability. The new model is compatible with sources including halogen, metal halide and RCL’s next generation LED head. It has a new direct-drive system for adjusting movement, with a range of motion of +/- 165° and +/- 90° in pan and tilt, respectively. Slip clutches have been included on both axes to improve mechanical reliability and to protect the movement mechanisms. As well as continuing to offer tool-less accessory change, the design also retains the MK1’s narrow 200mm turning circle, making it ideal for trough installations.
