Repousse is the traditional art of hand-hammering decorative relief onto sheetmetal. The technique originated around 800BC between Asia and Europe, and inChinese historical context, it began early as the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220).The technique involves using a hammer and various shaping tools. The form anddesign is achieved by working on both sides of the sheet metal; sections in reliefare worked from the interior while sections that are concave or pushed in areworked from the exterior. Depending upon the piece, ‘pitch’, a material similar toputty, is used as filler for hollow objects or to hold sheet metal in place while theartist works on the design. Pitch absorbs hammer blows and lends the properresistance for the artist to execute his design. Chase work is often used incombination with repousse for accentuating and refining the design. The processof hand-chasing metal begins with mallet blows at the center of the sheet metal, continuing out to the edges, never striking the same spot twice. Hand chasingshapes and forms metal without fundamentally altering its nature. The processhardens the metal, making it less plastic. The metal is then heated and workeduntil properly formed.
