Hospitality Chairity “Pimp up my chair” – the German magazine AIT (Architektur, Innenarchitektur, Technischer Ausbau) and the Swiss furniture manufacturer Dietiker Europese used this slogan to invite architects and interior architects to join the ‘Charity Chair’ project. They were asked to give the Dietiker ‘Ono’ chair a new look, according to their own ideas and with no restrictions. The new Onos were then auctioned, and the proceeds of the auction were donated to an orphanage in the South African township of Langa near Cape Town. AIT celebrated its 120th anniversary with the auctioning of 120 unique chairs. M+R contributed the Hospitality Chairity: a chair as a care product and a supporting function. With just a few simple changes, the Ono was converted into a hospitable ‘multi-purpose’ chair that can be used to move around in and that has a sliding tray to hold a good book or an excellent glass of wine. The red additions to the white chair and the + at the back of the chair are a playful reference to its ‘medical’ context. The + also stands for quality and positiveness.
