In Burgdorf, in the canton of Berne, we’ve been assigned by a private client to renovate a listed building. The house was built by the Swiss architect Emil Brändli in 1910, depicting the typical modern architecture of the early 20th century. The house has been renovated many times over the years, the requirements of a listed building were not considered though. As a result, the historic building fabric was not well preserved, even partly polluted with asbestos. Therefore, we aimed to remove any pollution, to insulate and renew the house by using colours and materials that meet the requirements of a listed building and highlight the early 20th century style. From underlying layers of paint we have been able to partially reuse some of the existing colours. The wood-cladded walls were renovated, in part completed and finally newly varnished. The existing parquet flooring was grounded and polished. The kitchen and bathroom of the house were replaced. Along with the renovation, the thermal performance of this historic home improved.
