High above the hum of Mumbai, on the 25th floor of a bustling high-rise, sits a home that doesn’t mirror the city — it thoughtfully opposes it. The brief was simple: create a home that could be effortlessly maintained, emotionally grounding, and quietly elegant — a refuge from long workdays and the relentless tempo of urban life.
The clients — a working couple with long, demanding schedules — sought a space that could offer pause without pretense. They were clear about one thing: the home needed to feel calming and uncluttered, not weighed down by trends or drama. The idea wasn’t to escape the city, but to rise above its noise — both literally and metaphorically. That vision became the cornerstone of the design journey.
Amid Mumbai’s towering skyline and charged energy, this home was always imagined as its counterpoint — a stillness suspended above the sprawl. A carefully laid oasis where natural hues, softened curves, and quiet materiality become instruments of calm. Every surface, every transition, was considered not to impress, but to hold — to ground its occupants in a rhythm far removed from the overstimulation that surrounds it.
Reflection of the Soul
The design journey began with a clear spatial intent: to preserve and enhance the apartment’s natural openness. The kitchen was conceived as an open volume, retaining the spatial generosity observed during the very first site visit. This decision allowed for seamless visual connections between the entry foyer, kitchen, and living area — uninterrupted by walls, yet gently defined through material shifts and subtle ceiling modulations.
The entry sequence offers the first note of this tonal composition — a muted console grounded against an oak veneer panel. This panel not only conceals the guest bedroom door but also sets the stage for a rhythm that flows across the shared spaces. From here, the ceiling takes over as an instrument of quiet choreography. A series of softened steps elevate the ceiling in the formal seating zone — creating a spatial crescendo that’s felt more than seen. This gesture subtly distinguishes zones without disrupting flow, encouraging movement and pause in equal measure.
The material palette is restrained but layered, drawing from tactile inspiration. Duotone sculptural armchairs — bold in profile, yet inviting in texture — sit in pools of sunlight filtered through layered sheers and heavy drapes. Oak veneer joinery, brushed brass details, boucle upholstery, linen, and curved silhouettes allow the room to be experienced as much through touch as through sight. These materials weren’t chosen for longevity — for the way they age, and the comfort they invite.
Cozy Refuge
The bedrooms echo the home’s overarching philosophy but with quieter, more intimate notes.
In the parents’ bedroom, minimal contemporary cues evolve into soft modernism. Dressed in a neutral palette with limewashed walls and crisp marble accents, the curved bed-back acts as both a sculptural gesture and a functional element — doubling as a curtain recess and extending the room’s subtle cadence. This curvature brings continuity and warmth, allowing the furniture to feel built into the architecture rather than placed within it.
A walk-in wardrobe, wrapped in tinted glass shutters, adds a layer of elegant privacy. Inside, a rustic white chandelier floats beneath a silver-laced stucco ceiling — a restrained flourish that evokes a sense of nostalgia within the modern shell.
Playful Composure
The daughter’s bedroom introduces a contrasting, youthful flair. A lemon-yellow fluted arch marks the entry with confidence while its soft edges echoed in the blush-pink ombré drapes that trail into the room. Subtle hues and sculptural details — like the layered crest-shaped headboard and the delicately panelled study nook — create a mood that is youthful yet composed.
In the third bedroom, a more meditative palette takes over.Sage greens and soft greys wrap the walls and furnishings, allowing light to diffuse gently across surfaces. While reinforcing the idea of calm that can be designed into the background of everyday life.
