Concrete balconier

SCT Estudio de Arquitectura as Architects

A near triangular plot. A residential building that had to have a square floor plan due to municipal regulations. There are two open spaces on the street level: one for public use in the chamfer; another for private use. Formally, the design is a compact stone volume, with façades that make it impossible to determine the divisions between the units on each floor. There is emphasis on a sense of unity in the massing and the experience of the building.

In terms of the building envelope, the stone material is largely without openings on the lateral façade that faces the chamfer. On the north and south façades, the basic rectangular plan of the building is broken by the exterior spaces of each unit: cantilevered exposed concrete balconies. Facing south, the direction toward which the master bedrooms of each and every one of the units on the five floors are oriented, two per floor.
