BARVY Restaurant

2B.GROUP as Architects

The main concept of the restaurant is to show present-day Ukraine, with its ancient traditions, everyday life, deep roots, and interpret it through the modern viewpoint. BARVY turns a traditional perception of a restaurant into the venue for regular exhibitions of talented Ukrainian artists. The restaurant is globally divided into two zones - the main hall with open kitchen, a bar, a children's room and a year-round terrace section with panoramic windows from floor to ceiling with a view over business Kiev.

Design brief:

The restaurant's space is the venue for the exposition of works of contemporary art by Ukrainian artists. The opening of the restaurant was accompanied by the exhibition of the legend of Ukrainian painting by Ivan Marchuk.

The restaurant is a place where absolutely different people can meet. They can be office workers who visit business lunches on weekdays, or people who are interested in contemporary painting, or families with children, because the restaurant includes a children's room and systematic lectures on modern art for children.

Design challenges:

Barvy Restaurant was opened at the place of the coffee shop. It was very important to preserve the existing ventilation system, which limited the area for the development of the structural element of the ceiling. It was also decided to leave the surface of the terrace the same, and to include the terrace in a warm contour for year-round use.

Taking into account the concept of the restaurant, the main task is to show modern Ukraine, with its ancient traditions, everyday life, deep roots, to feature it through the modern prism of perception.

Barvyis pictured not only as a public catering establishment, but as a site for Ukrainian artists, so it was important to reserve the maximum free surfaces on the walls for expositions, to set up a gallery system of suspended ceilings.

Design results:

The restaurant is globally divided into two zones which are the main hall with open kitchen, a bar, a children's room and a year-round terrace section with panoramic windows from floor to ceiling with a view to business Kiev.

The heart of the main hall is a bar decorated with panels associated with ceramic products. A structural installation growsover the bar on the ceiling that proliferates in all directions, performs a consolidating function for space, a function of illumination. The creation of this structural installation was inspired by the wooden shingle roofs of the churches of Kyivan Rus.

The floor of the restaurant is made of dry oak planks.Digitized deformed traditional woodcarvingpattern isusedon the elements of decor panels and furniture.

Braided installations of rods in the form of tit birds have become the accent element of the terrace area whichare a symbol and a charm of Barvy restaurant.
