The project is located on Shuangshan Island in Zhangjiagang, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, covering approximately 20 square kilometers between the Zhangjiagang shipping channel and the Yangtze River. The project aims to transform the island into a resort destination focusing on ecological preservation, cultural resources, sports, wellness, relaxation, rural tourism, and education.
In September 2018, the Shuangshan Island Lighthouse Guesthouse International Design Competition was launched by the Zhangjiagang Shuangshan Island Tourism Resort Management Committee and Xiangban Cultural Tourism Group. The competition invited global design institutions, with SoBA emerging as the winner from 33 submissions. The design was reviewed by prestigious institutions, including Columbia University and ETH Zurich, and top design firm MSP.
The design inspiration comes from the image of a lighthouse standing above the waves, symbolizing the harmony between nature and man-made structures. The lighthouse, representing a "sail," stands as a focal point above the "waves" symbolized by the guesthouse cluster. This creates an architectural narrative of dynamic beauty and place.
The layout contrasts dynamic and static zones, with the lighthouse placed in the southwest, creating an open public space, while the guesthouses are positioned in the northern part, offering a private, quiet retreat. The design incorporates natural water features and undulating terrain, creating a fluid, wave-like form and immersive experiences.
The lighthouse’s design combines a solid outer shell with vertical glass strips, giving it a sense of lightness and vertical extension. At night, illuminated glass strips outline upward curves, adding vibrancy. The light beam from the tower, visible across the island and the Yangtze River, becomes a focal point during festive occasions.
The architecture blends with the natural environment, offering a harmonious connection between the design and the island’s ecological beauty. The project aims to create a landmark that brings new energy and charm to Shuangshan Island.
