Casa di Gesso, a school of theatre and performing arts

Pier Currà Architettura as Architects

The school plays an important social role within the city community by involving several generations, especially young and very young ones, it helps the growth of their relation to the world of theatre and representation. Starting from the spatiality of the traditional agricultural equipment, the building is reorganised to house the functions necessary for carrying out the activities including graphic arts, music and theatre.

The building opens to the neighbouring countryside through an intervention on the old portico which is buffered by a large glass diaphragm and a large sliding sunbreaker high across the floor, shielding the main front. This element becomes a scenic backdrop for internal activities and is made with a metal structure that supports many brick elements that can rotate independently, triggering a “playful” interaction between the young actors and the architecture itself.
Inside, behind the sunscreen, there is a large triple-height multipurpose room that becomes the beating heart of the building and a place to host events and shows produced by the school.
