We began with an L-shaped plot and the requirement to build two houses of a similar size. The plot was divided into two and, taking advantage of the planning regulations for the area, were aligned with the road.
Because the plot is located on the edge of the neighbourhood, we aimed for intimate, inward-looking home, promoting family life around the interior couryards and towards the architecture itself. However, the sun deck on the roof is a large open space with views of Cabo de Gata.
The Costacabana Houses are arranged around courtyards; the communal uses are placed along the perimeter, thus creating natural barriers that protect the living areas from the street, while at the same time opening them up to the interior courtyards.
The bunker concept is also reflected in the exterior. False facade of up to six meters give the project unity, while the unevenly arranged opening protect the interior from the scorching sun of Costacabana and frame the views. A smooth white exterior finish calls to mind the traditional Mediterranean houses typical of the area.
