Christ Church Grammar Preparatory School

With_Architecture Studio as Architects

The new Preparatory School is the largest development undertaken by Christ Church Grammar School since the Claremont campus was established over 100 years ago. Commissioning for this milestone project commenced in 2015 with a thorough review of the campus masterplan to inform site selection. The building was completed for first semester 2019, accommodating a teaching program from Pre-kindergarten to Year 6, with a projected student population of 580 boys.

The new Preparatory School will reflect the diversity of the learning community and will be a modern, functional, efficient learning space that reflects the School’s values and captures the vitality of early years’ education.

Key Points

Wrapped in jewel-toned iridescent tiles, the hub is a purposeful juxtaposition to the architectural style of the main building.

• The new Preparatory School provides for boys Pre-kindergarten to Year 6 a state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment with a variety of contemporary, functional and adaptable spaces that capture the vitality of the early years of education.

• A core goal was to consolidate and reduce the physical footprint of the Preparatory School which was dispersed across the campus. The new development replaces existing learning spaces with a single building configured over three levels.

• Locating the new Preparatory School along the western boundary of the campus maximises open playing space. The siting and compositional strategy for the new building also presents a distinct and impressive identity for the junior school and is a branding statement for Christ Church.

• A key feature, the Innovation Hub, is a distinct, free-standing element housing Technology, Research and Innovation spaces. Wrapped in jewel-toned iridescent tiles, the hub is a purposeful juxtaposition to the architectural style of the main building.

• Read from left to right, the eastern elevation progresses from structured to playful through the abstracted forms of the perforated façade. The narrative is one of a sturdy foundation to a rich spatial experience, providing students a platform to grow and learn.

• The new Preparatory School will reflect the diversity of the learning community and will be a modern, functional, efficient learning space that reflects the School’s values and captures the vitality of early years’ education.
