Colorful & Vibrant Southern California Home

Lundstrom Interiors as Designers

Interior designer Esther Lundstrom created a vibrant, fun and polished home for this family. “It’s important to me that the owners not only have a beautiful interior but also a usable home, where they can play and relax, with sophisticated backdrop.”

By layering various textures together, Lundstrom wanted to create strong visual interest through materiality.
She used leathers, thick wovens, velvets, fur and different pile height rugs, which combine with concrete and various kinds of warm woods.
“The lighting also allowed me to bring additional articulated textures such as mixed metals, rattan and Japanese paper with leather stitching details,” says the interior designer. “The fiber and ceramic canvas art on top of the home’s two fireplaces add another dimension.”

- The colors in the entry set the tone for the rest of the home: blacks, whites, ambers, burnt sienna, mixed metals and concrete walls.
- To create a calming ambiance, the interior designer chose neutral-colored pieces for the more oversized furnishing items, like sofas and chairs. Complementing colors were used for smaller items.
- The main bedroom is adorned with various hues of navy blue paired with warm wood and amber tones to create a haven of peace. “My clients are both doctors, and with one of them being an ER doctor, making the main bedroom as relaxing as possible was essential,” says Lundstrom. “This led the way to opt for a darker, moodier and more calming palette.”
- The great room plays off the russet-toned wood beam ceiling by incorporating warmth into the furnishings and decor with burnt sienna, rust, caramel, brass and copper tones. Mixing black accents disrupted the neutrals, providing contrast and visual interest.
- In the living room, pops of color were inspired by the fun and vibrant wall art. The pastel hues juxtapose the abstract Japanese calligraphy wallpaper in the adjacent dining room. “It was important to make an overall cohesive design throughout the house but bring a distinct character to each room as well,” the interior designer says. “The contrasting colors in the dining room paired with the warmer earth tones of whiskey and mahogany create a striking and welcoming space for the family.”
- In the covered outdoor patio, the objective was to create a tranquil oasis where neutrals of white, gray and coffee mixed in with the lush green surrounding. The covered patio was built from the ground up Lundstrom shaped a place for hanging out and hosting year-round while being fully immersed in the environment.

The homeowners’ love for color and the home’s existing architecture were the sources of inspiration.
“This Southern California modern home set in horse country brings on the charm and character with pops of colors and material play,” says Esther Lundstrom.
