Coty Fume Scent Lounge - Coty Interactive Brand Environment

Eventscape Inc. as Manufacturers

Designers at DKStudio approached Eventscape with a new experiential, retail concept for Coty Canada, one of the largest beauty companies in the world. The first of its kind, Coty’s Fume Scent Lounge introduces a custom digital scent technology that gives customers a sensorial way of experiencing fragrances.

Contracted to engineer, fabricate and install all elements that make up this unique store-within-a-shop, Eventscape built a complex curved interactive bar with integrated digital screens, a curbed fabric canopy, ten stand-alone digital towers with shelving and three additional towers with internally lit, product displays.

We’re proud to note that this project won three acclaimed 2018 Shop! Retail Design Awards for Fixture of the Year Award: Curved Display Bar, Gold Award: Branded Shop within a Store and the Use of Technology Award: Non-spray Scent Technology. It also won Gold in the Retail Category of the Digital Signage Awards.

Multiple materials were used to build this retail environment: steel, aluminum, solid surface, MDF, plywood, fabric, glass, acrylic, high density boards, and laminates. Materials were used for their strengths and were chosen based on location (ground vs. ceiling), function, performance requirements, plus the required shape.

Central Bar

The central, curved display bar design was an extremely complex, geometrical shape with double curves and an exaggerated cantilever. Spanning 22-feet long, 5-1/2 feet wide and 3-1/2 feet high, it required an internal wood sub-structure that was clad with heat-formed solid surface material.

Specialized high-density material and 5-axis milling was used to make the cantilever. Nine layers of ½-inch thick solid surface were built up, milled and smoothed to create the curvature of the bar base. This was achieved by using a combination of CNC and hand finishing. The 4-inch thick top was also built from solid surface. Lockable drawers on the curved sides of the bar add functionality.

Custom digital screens were inset in the bar top and provide customer feedback on selected fragrances by using Coty’s custom shaker bottles (non-spray inhalers). This innovative technology provides an advanced way to experience fragrances without being overwhelmed by their scent. The shaker bottles are placed on a backlit solid surface reader, providing information about the selected fragrance, digitally displayed on screen.

Towers

Ten identical towers surround the bar and have an internal structure that resist lateral loads, while also supporting the canopy above. Product display shelving was made from ¾-inch white solid surface, milled to accommodate LED lighting to illuminate merchandise on product display shelves. All towers incorporated lockable storage and are clad in premium matte black laminate.

Canopy

Inspired by a “scent fume,” the form of the curved canopy was built with an aluminum frame and pillow-cased white leatherette fabric coverings. Expertly templated, the 54-foot running length of the double-sided textile skin is taut, and wrinkle-free. Cantilevered in three locations from the towers, there are no hang points. It’s finished with solid surface kick plates at each end for durability.

Installation

Custom engineered lifting solutions allowed for a smooth installation using a 2-ton spider crane. Due to the expedited install, we manufactured and pre-finished everything in our production facility to eliminate dust, odor and debris – typical of installations. This process also ensured that all digital components remained uncompromised.
