Desert Ridge

Douglas Fredrikson Architects as Architects

Nestled by a Desert wash, this Community Center becomes a centerpiece for a high end production builder community. From the street a large, soaring washed plaster wall creates a powerful presence and separates the glass spaces that open to the landscape and mountain views. The departure for this project type is in designing it as a large custom home with emphasis on entertaining and recreation at a very low budget. Piercing the entry wall, is a glass covered steel structure that leads through the Lobby to the Main Courtyard outside.

Left is the Fitness Center and Locker Rooms, on the right a Great room separated by a large stone Fireplace. The Great Room has an exhibition cooking and Game Room all focusing and opening up to the Resort pool. The low slung deep overhang ceilings use Glulam Beams and corrugated steel deck soaring out above the glass for large shaded protected areas. Rusticated stone interplays with washed rough plaster walls and steel detailing. Stained concrete floors, ash millwork, and exposed utilities were chosen along with major structural elements to keep the cost of construction down. A Desert Modern structure, playful and amenitized , environmentally conscious and integrating inside and outside.
