Summer of Love

UNStudio as Architects

The Schirn Kunsthalle poses a special challenge to the exhibition designer, being 70 meters long and 10 meters wide with a circular atrium at the end. Thinking up ways to break up the linearity of the space has resulted in two very different exhibition lay-outs. An earlier design consisting of a purple, suspended construction for the architectural show ‘Visions and Utopias’ darkened the space to focus the attention on often finely detailed work, whereas the ‘Summer of Love’ shown here broaches almost the opposite effect.

The exhibition of psychedelic art of the 1960-s and 1970-s consists of 350 highly diverse items from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, film, environment, architecture, graphic design, and fashion. The strong visual impact of the works is capitalized on. Two abstracted, stretched-out spirals intertwine, generating interstitial spaces where installations and larger-sized works are placed. The entire construction has been painted silver as homage to the spirit of the time.
