Extension Of the General Hospital in Šempeter

Prima d.o.o as Architects

The new hospital extension is visually distinguished by the prominent red aluminum facade elements. In order to emphasize the two main red elements made of aluminum composite panels (Alpolic), the remainder of the facade is finished in a render of neutral concrete tone.

The project for the extension of the General Hospital in Šempeter was won on a national architectural competition in 2007 and completed as part of a nationwide grid of ER units in Slovenia in 2015.

The extension of the General Hospital in Šempeter houses: OR Block, ER unit, Endoscopy unit, central kitchen and warehouse for the whole hospital complex. The extension is also the main connection (corridor) between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ hospital building.

This new extension fills the gap between the two main hospital buildings and thereby constitutes the central element linking together the whole hospital complex. Visually it is distinguished by the prominent red aluminum facade elements. The central role and importance of the emergency Centre is emphasized by the red canopy and the wall marked “urgenca” (emergency), which indicates the entrance. That point has also become the main entry point to the hospital for the majority of patients. In addition to its protective function, the red canopy serves as the main indicator of the hospital in urban planning terms. In order to emphasize the two main red elements made of aluminum composite panels (Alpolic), the remainder of the facade is finished in a render of neutral concrete tone
