Gerlain SPA at the Waldorf Astoria in Jerusalem

Keren Offner - ok design as Architects

Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Jerusalem is a five-star hotel that was built partially on the ruins of the historical Palace Hotel.

The Palace was a luxurious Arab hotel that closed in 1935 due to heavy competition in the area. It was later used as an office building occupied by the British mandate but stood deserted for years. The facade of the Hotel was completely preserved and restored. Behind it, the Waldorf Astoria was built and opened in 2014.

By 2018, when the owner of the hotel requested to build a SPA that would meet Waldorf Astoria standards, the high-end cosmetics brand Guerlain was chosen.

The Guerlain company has only about 20 Spas around the globe, all in exquisite locations. Each one of them with a unique design that flatters the local atmosphere. The creative team, Interior designer Keren Offner and project manager Maya Joffe, were invited to a thorough and inspiring tour through the exciting history and legacy of Guerlain’s 200 years of cosmetics creating in Paris.

“Very early in the process”, Offner says, “we realized that the location dictates the concept and it could not be bent.” The greatest challenge, and the greatest opportunity, derived from the connection between the 3 axes of the project: Waldorf Astoria, Guerlain Paris, and the city of Jerusalem. Each axis is loaded with character, values, history, and heritage of its own. “Exactly like the people of the city of Jerusalem, the target audience of the Spa, is diverse.

Our aim was to create a design that is both luxurious yet clean and modest since modesty is highly appreciated in Jerusalem”. Offner seeked in her design to connect the different parts of the puzzle and fulfill the will for pluralism, making this spa a modern Pilgrimage center.

The Jerusalem stone is the most typical material for construction in Jerusalem for centuries. Although the city experienced over the course of history many different regimes, it stayed classic and modest, and therefore this authentic local stone was the obvious choice to be the anchor for the project, wrapping the space like a box.

The materials that were chosen to accompany the natural stone, are plain finished oak and matt finished brass. “Those materials are not eye-popping, yet they transmit quality and provide the proper platform for the main events in the spa: the experience of the client, before, during and after the treatments and of course for the products exposed on the shelves.״ concludes Offner. The entirety of the materials and textures, grant a fresh and updated casing to the classic brand, referring above all to the design of the iconic “bee bottle” - hand-painted in gold perfume bottles.

The space of 1,500 sqm includes a 35sqm indoor pool, changing rooms, double saunas (2 Hammam experience and 2 dry saunas), 7 single treatment rooms, one classic double room, and one suite for couple treatment with a private dry sauna, a relaxation room, a 100 sqm gym, and a waiting salon.

A connecting link is attaching all of the different parts of the project. The materials, all-natural, mineral, clean and pure. The color scheme of the upholstery, the wallpaper in the corridor, the Fenix formica in the treatment cabins, co-habit and create a warm, calm atmosphere, providing the ultimate zen and well-being experience the Spa sanctify.
