Health and Fitness Spa Friedrichshafen

Behnisch Architekten as Architects

In addition to the outdoor activities in the summer months on the shores of Lake Constance the indoor swimming pool at Friedrichshafen’s Sportpark will be enriching the leisure time facilities for all sporting enthusiasts. The surrounding is a very heterogeneous, less urban fabric, which is only partially landscaped. The entire sports park area will be architecturally enhanced by the new building. It will form a striking prelude to the inner city area, being a new inspiring component of the city with a particular architectural importance in contrast to the existing neighboring buildings, the Bodensee-Center and the ZF Arena and their more functional architecture.

The new indoor pool will meet the requirements of a modern sports, family and wellness bath for visitors, clubs and schools. Also part of the concept are different pools and water basins with an adventure slide, an area for toddlers and diving platforms in different heights as well as a spacious and attractive sauna world. Functionally and structurally separated it will be possible to use the various units individually. A tranquil outdoor area with a salt water pool, a sauna garden, lounge areas in the winter garden and outdoors will give the new building a unique character. Additionally, a public multi-story car park will be provided with approximately 420 parking spaces.

A clear design language characterizes the form of the new building. The introverted outdoor area with terraces and a sauna garden on the first floor will be the heart of the building, where all other areas will be directly linked to. The large scale, transparent façade that faces the streets will enable the bather to visually take part in the city life. Due to its functional requirements the staggered roof differs in height, marking the upper, horizontal end of the bathing area. Inspired by a waveform, the horizontal lamellas underline the idea of the façade being a tailored thermal coat with an emphasis of the corner at the Riedleoeschstrasse / Meistershofener Strasse.

The multi-story car park will be an integral part of the ensemble, functionally separated, but integrated in its appearance by horizontal slats. The façade of the parking levels will be covered with Virginia creeper and will thus support the landscape aspect in regards to the adjacent Riedlewald Park. Therefore the parking levels are perceived as rather a built landscape than a parking garage.
