WHEN CLASSICAL MEETS SIMPLISTIC: CONTRAST AS A STRATEGY

KTX archiLAB as Architects

This clinic is a diabetes specialized clinic located in Kobe city, Japan. It includes conventional spaces like general examination and treatments rooms, a reception area, waiting area, and a backyard in addition to special counseling rooms. The medical background behind this clinic is to focus on the healing process by natural ways, mainly by giving dietary guidance for diabetes patients. The design process is similar to that of a commercial facility, in order to be an outstanding clinic chosen by clients over competitors; it has to communicate what is different in a clear way. This difference stands in the special counseling services; therefor it was necessary to put a contrast between these rooms and the more common parts of the clinic. From the minimalistic reception desk and waiting room with a bright wooden panels finish, the patient will notice an alternative less bright and cozier counseling room decorated with black classical moldings, shelf-furniture and a green wall, all separated from the waiting area by a thick white minimalistic gate. This contrast will subconsciously inform the patient about the specificity of this clinic and highlights the special service it provides in the counseling rooms.
