Masterplan of the central embankment of Sochi

Masterplan of the central embankment of Sochi

IND as Architects

The masterplan for Sochi's central waterfront is based on the principles of future-oriented design and the desire to create a world-class waterfront that will provide a sustainable future in harmony with the coastal environment. The concept is based on the idea of transforming the waterfront from an alienated mega-space to a system of multi-scale spaces that meet modern demands for multifunctionality and reflect a local identity.

The concept proposes a symbiosis of a dynamic city and rich nature and elements — the waterfront will become a guide between the saturated urban environment and the unique landscapes of Sochi National Park, Dendrarium. The masterplan combines all the objects of the waterfront into a single recreational space with zones of different scale and content. We adhere to the principles of sustainable design, so in addition to architecture we carefully develop economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects.

As a result of the rethinking of the territory, two opposing in spirit spaces — the city and the marine element — enter into a dialogue, are woven into a single history and form a unique link in the identity of the city. The combination of the two poles — the saturated urban fabric on the west side and the natural massif on the east — will also be harmoniously reflected in the urban planning solution and the choice of materials: from urban to natural, from glass and metal to natural and green.

The masterplan offers not just a combination of buildings with different sets of functions, but the connection and complementarity of the different functional areas. Open galleries / freestanding or open meeting rooms form a co-scale environment: large volumes of business and exhibition spaces break up into compact and comfortable for human perception, woven into the landscape along the linear route.

The alternation of active saturated spaces and quieter natural ones creates a whole palette of experiences and provides a balance of areas for both active leisure and places for rest and relaxation. Also the area will provide a various cultural program with educational, recreational and tourist infrastructure. Thus, we are creating a multifunctional zone that meets the interests of business, tourism and the local population. The waterfront will become the center of attraction of Sochi, a connecting element of the city and nature, one of the main areas of welcome for tourists and residents — transport hubs and main arrival points for tourists (railway station, sea port) will be connected with Sochi National Park. Thus, the introduction to the multifaceted city color will continue with immersion in the rich nature of Sochi.
