Montgomery Renovation

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as Architects

As Chicago’s River North neighborhood evolved into a cultural hub at the end of the 20th century, the 27-story Montgomery Ward Headquarters was perceived as a dark and dated structure. SOM, as design architect, was retained to convert the office tower into high-rise luxury residential condominiums that would take advantage of the building’s unobstructed views of downtown and the city’s north side. The design team replaced the original dark bronze curtain wall with a skin of aluminum and clear glass, softening the severity of the tower and flooding the new living spaces with natural light and ventilation.
