Moon Terrace

The place name Wolmido reflects its unique terrain. The name directly translates into Moon (Wol)-tail (Mi) Island (Do), which originates from the shape of the island resembling the tail of a crescent.

The client requested a unique and distinctive moon-themed building that melds with the scenery of Wolmido. To embody the desire to go outdoors, which was suppressed during the 'stay at home’ period of the pandemic era, this building pursues a wide-open space that can maximize contact surface with the natural environment.

The ground area covered with the exoskeleton composed of round and pointed arches is reminiscent of 'Portico' in Italian architecture, which has the characteristics of both "passage" and "domain."

The portico-like ground area of the building was designed to draw pedestrians to the customer lounge, filled with a lively atmosphere.

The podium of the building is constructed stably by irregularly stacking a natural stone with a rough texture. Contrarily, the cladding of the building, composed of a seamless single-bodied metallic material, covers various multi-leveled exterior spaces, producing a white-colored pavilion with a breezy atmosphere.

To avoid the clichéd rectangular building boundaries common on rectangular sites, the multiangular plane was contrasted with the elevation expressed by a curved line with a bumpy detail. In addition, to emphasize the main arc of the front and rear façades, symbolizing the moon, stainless steel coloration was used. Passengers walking along the east-west walking axis where the site is located will encounter the moon-shaped main arc.

As an adaptive building that can respond to changes in weather conditions, a specific awning and an insulated folding door were used. An awning that reveals a beautiful silhouette through uplighting was applied. The rain downpipe of the awning is hidden behind the exterior pillars so that drainage of the awning does not harm its appearance.

In addition, by floating the third floor, the openness of the second-floor lounge, the main terrace, was maximized. The third-floor lounge and main terrace are connected by a round staircase.

Since the building is located near the seaside, THK2 Galvarium was used as the main exterior material for its resistance to salt damage. In order to prevent seasonal thermal deformation, two-way slot holes were constructed throughout the metal exterior. To create a detailed composition on the facades, external metal produced using laser processing and corrosion-resistant painting was put on the box column and the curved steel member.

As a characterful place where you can enjoy signature seafood boils while enjoying cozy sea breezes under the moonlight, we wish “Moon Terrace” to become a memorable spot in Wolmido.
