Narikala - Contemporary refurbishment of an old town quarter

Pott Architects as Architects

Narikala is an ancient stronghold overlooking historic Tbilisi. Being one of of the most famous parts of the old town this is the place the historic quarter of the Georgian capital derived its name and identity from. Here the oldest buildings and monuments of Georgia’s architectural heritage can be found. Most historic buildings on the mountain’s side between river valley and fortress have been damaged if not demolished during the last century.

For this reason the important link between Narikala castle and old town has been lost over the years. By developing and enforcing a sensible urban strategy this link will be re-established.

A masterplan for the upper part of the historic quarter by Pott Architects will revitalise an abandoned site that at present is a reminiscence of an illegal waste disposal. The most complex historic and geological conditions of the site were challenging factors in building a strategy for this area. At the same time a contemporary design based on the rich cultural heritage of Georgia had to be developed. The final design is a strong statement based on combined aspects from Urban Design, Conservation, Architecture and Economy.
