The brief was to create a 4 bedroom house in the back garden of the client´s parent’s property. By splitting the land the new site is accessed via a housing estate, the new building follows the pattern of development in the estate of 1.5 storey double pitched detached houses by being parallel to neighbouring buildings and the gable wall facing the road. To better utilise the angular shaped plot the building was split up into 2 halves of mono-pitch volumes, staggered in plan and height. The 2 volumes are articulated in different materials of white render and brick, a contemporary take on the 70´s style houses of the area.
The rear kitchen space projects out and connects to the garden via a large glazed screen. The upper windows are formed with deep recesses to prevent overlooking of neighbouring properties. The first floor landing space is designed as a play area for the 3 children of the house. It is open to the dining and hall side. The central circulation space is of elegant double height, connecting the living spaces with the private upper levels.
