Rooted in total connectivity – the Newark Visitor Center is an inter-active destination that bridge the historic and modern, celebrates the diversity + ethnicity of the existing urban fabric and creates a revitalized “gateway” for Newark to engage + unite its many communities.
The historical heritage of Newark sets the stage for a progressive, yet respectful design and structure that rises above and breathes out in all directions, inviting the user to re-connect with the total environment and offering a fresh perspective of the riverfront, the park, the city, the community, the people. Recognized as a new benchmark for the city, the Center offers a modern translation of the many historical landmarks throughout Newark.
More than a place for travelers and passers-by – this Center is a true cultural beacon offering Newark renewed hope and the strength in reclaiming what it stands for and where it wants to go. Visually, the design links the Visitor Center to historic Newark, the new Riverfront Park and NYC as a forward-thinking metropolis.
The extension of Congress + Jefferson Streets through the site enhances pedestrian/community access, green space is optimized by marrying the Center with the Riverfront Park and site circulation is thoughtfully integrated.
Sustainable + responsible building practices are featured through the use of recycled, reclaimed and re-fabricated locally sourced materials, water + energy conservation, daylight + views and natural ventilation.
The Center’s profit potential resides in public/private and community investment and utilization of its gallery, auditorium, observatory + retail spaces.
