Ornano

Stera Architectures as Architects

The plot is located between Boulevard d’Ornano and Rue Championnet. It was three facades, including two on the street and one, which is no less important, on the adjacent nursery school.

The building is a single construction which expresses the programme : the crèche on the ground floor, with the student residence above, on 6 and 8 floor levels. The volumes are arranged in a continuous sequence, leaving a maximum amount of space and letting light into a neighbouring courtyards.

We wanted to give the students who live there an original feeling of belonging, of a “bee-hive”, of a community life.

The façade of Boulevard d’Ornano undulates and receives light from the south-east. It is in harmony with the fine adjacent building, which features a protruding part that forms a rounded bow window. In the urban complex formed by Boulevard d’Ornano, the residence’s façade provides a brightly-lit feature and extends the movement.

The windows create a rhythm on the surface and, by means of vertically sliding blinds, they appear and disappear, letting the undulations become, on the eight floor levels, like the undulations become, on the eight floor levels, like columns in the perspective of the boulevard. The internal façade, facing onto the various courtyards, is one single uniform elevation. The facade on the Rue Championnet adapts the design of the boulevard façade and makes the residence unified and identifiable on each side of the plot.
