Port Melbourne House

Thomas Williams Architects (architects_TW) as Architects

We were approached to transform a tired heritage home with a cheap 1980’s extension into a ‘modern heritage‘ home. There was very little natural daylight entering the home so our design intent involved removal of the previous addition, re-orientate the living areas toward the north (best daylight for the southern hemisphere) and fully refurbish the original home.

We were intent on using a light pallette generally with a dark stained cedar wall marking the change between old and new.The entire site is just 288sq.m in size so there were significant constraints. We needed to build on boundaries and this meant the use of skylights was very important .

The original house was re-levelled, insulated and the footings strengthened. We also had the opportunity to place a small pool in the garden which was not in the original brief. To the owners credit they decided this would suit their young family and the pool is a calming addition to the home.

The result is a warm, open & friendly addition & renovation. The materials selected are a beautiful blend of textures which offer natural warmth & appeal.
