Under the Tulip Tree

Atelier SAD as Architects

Family house in Bavaria, Germany
We had a small plot with a tulip tree that had to stay in the middle of it to work with here but we like challenges. To bring the tree in we cut the house in two halves and pushed one of them off the axis a bit. The two halves are connected via an airy staircase netted in stainless steel wire. Both halves share the same concrete base that also serves as the ceiling for the garage, playroom, sauna and storage spaces. The garden level houses the hall, living room and kitchen. Sliding doors and mobile walls give onto terraces and further beyond into the garden itself. The bedrooms are located upstairs. The glazing of the gables is photochromic. Solar panels and a heat pump make the house passive in terms of its energy consumption.
