Renovation of the WiSo Faculty of the University of Cologne

SSP AG as Architects

The University of Cologne is planning to renovate the building of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. As part of a VOF tender, SSP was awarded the planning contract for the renovation of the 1960s design by Cologne architect Wilhelm Riphan, which was awarded the 1st Cologne Architecture Prize. In the first construction phase, comprehensive measures to restore the operational safety of the 9-storey high-rise slab and the Audimax will be implemented, taking into account the requirements of monument protection. The future use of the building will be ensured by a moderate integration of the technical equipment.

In the second construction phase, particular attention will be paid to the renovation of the 3 lecture halls and the other 3 seminar buildings in the low-rise building. The ensemble of high-rise and low-rise building, with its interlocking in the inner green belt, the spacious walkways and the glazed inner courtyards, will be preserved in its unique way as a witness to the post-war period. Completion is planned for early 2024.
