Studio Egret West’s scheme in Canning Town is for 336 much needed new homes and laying the foundations of a new community with forward-thinking enterprises on the site. At its heart is Hoy Street, which will be part pedestrianised. Commercial units on the ground and mezzanine levels are designed to attract businesses in need of affordable space. Caxton Street North has the potential to become a local destination because the flexible space allows companies to adapt their space to different ways of trading, for example by opening their doors on weekend morning. The charity, the House of Fairytales (who moved into one of the warehouse buildings on-site last year) has helped breathe new life into the disused industrial buildings by starting outreach work with local schools and other arts-based organisations in the wider community. As a result, the old factories are already hosting exhibitions and workshops for children. This will deliver a significant boost to the local area with new homes and crating employment by attracting forward thinking enterprises.
