Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center

Stantec as Architects

The new Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center creates a warm experience that focuses on the comfort of young patients and their families.Rather than treat traditional core areas as separate rooms, these spaces remain open with special attention paid to floor patterns, color, and changes in ceiling height to create visual interest and division of space. Furthermore, thegreeter, parent lounge, pantry, play area, and teen spaces are integrated into an open interactive flexible space. The incorporation of interactive elements throughout the unit support intuitive wayfinding, while age appropriate diversions comfort patients and their siblings.

The designerscreated care teamwork areas that promote clinician collaboration in both open and enclosed settings and provide both seated and standing work surfaces to support the health of the staff. The use of glass in these spaces allow patients and their families to maintain visual contact even when staff are in a private setting, creating a sense of constant connection to clinicians.

Exhaustive efforts were made to ensure patient families’ comfort during their stay on the unit.  A stocked pantry with snacks and toiletries, parent showers, and laundry facilities are just a few of the amenities included at the facility. Additionally, a private respite room is available for family use. Each of the 17 private patient rooms feature generous family space with a sofa that turns into a bed for two as well as other comfortable seating and work surfaces.
