To commemorate the centenary of Giacomo Puccini’s death, the 2024 Caracalla Festival featured new productions of Tosca and Turandot. Architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas made their opera debut with stage designs that skillfully merged the ancient setting of the Baths of Caracalla with modern minimalism. Their concept used a white, modular stage design to highlight the characters and maintain harmony with the monumental Roman ruins, rather than overpowering them.
The set incorporated lightweight structures, digital projections of Roman landmarks, and distant China to create an immersive environment. Dynamic lighting enhanced the emotional depth of the operas, shifting to reflect the intensity of the characters’ journeys.
