St. Johns Church in Bremgarten b. Bern

Rykart Architekten AG as Architects

The simple, square structure of the St. Johns Church from 1972 forms a unit with the upper school building and the reformed parish hall. The church was designed as a steel structure with wooden wall elements. The interior is characterized by a warm atmosphere due to a skylight and the wooden surfaces. Sliding walls allow flexible division of the sacred space. The facade is renovated in terms of energy technology while preserving the details and the original ex-pression.

Additional space required for offices and meeting rooms are created with the expansion of the upstream basement floor. The different levels in the existing basement are balanced. A new multi-purpose room and the kitchen will be placed in the extension. Through a common entrance, the two areas are clearly visible and accessible for disabled people. The original construction remains visible through the restrained renovation and the accurate details. The extension of the basement floor fits in naturally, the clarity and expression of the building is retained.
