Studio Furillen tries to both preserve the strong feeling and character to be found on Furillen and at the same time create something completely new. To be both closed and open. Simple yet complex. Distinct, strong character and discreet, unobtrusive. Minimal material and an industrial facade structure create simplicity. The various hydraulic and mechanical terraces that can be raised or lowered allow the building to completely change character.
The studio aims to offer a feeling of seclusion, while also providing scope for meetings and creative activities. The flexible solution involving movable elements enables a rich variation in light conditions and views to all four points of the compass. Total seclusion is also possible and daylight then comes in via skylights and the atrium. The atrium offers a choice of three levels, and this also affects the character of the interior.
Inside the building are both large open spaces and smaller areas that can function independently of one another. This allows the studio to be used for different purposes at the same time.
The idea for building the studio on Furillen was born during a trip with Mikael Blomqvist to Sea Ranch in California in November 2008. Back home in Sweden sketching began immediately. Just after New Year a building permit was granted and planning got under way. Construction of the 500 m² studio commenced in spring 2009 and shortly after came another inspirational trip, this time to Tokyo, Japan.
Planning continued in the autumn as construction progressed. All the beams were cast in concrete and prefabricated concrete wall elements were used as a framework. The roof structure was steel with a surface layer of sedum.
In spring 2010 detailed planning of the building began. The facade was clad with sheets of Corten steel, 4,500 × 1,500 × 5 mm. At the same time the hydraulic adjustable terraces were installed. The interior of the building was completed in the autumn. Six layers of plaster were applied to all internal surfaces, while a specially-produced profile system was installed for all material junctions.
In November 2010, the building was complete, two years after the first sketch.
