The 50.000 m2 site, mainly occupied by Rockwell Automation, will be developed into a new city district after the concentration of the industrial company’s activities to new premises within Torfeld Süd in the summer of 2012. Landowner Mobimo in collaboration with the city of Aarau and GastroSocial invited eight Swiss teams to develop proposals for the site.
The new city quarter is meant to function as an urban village in itself. Next to accommodating a varied mix of functions and user groups from all backgrounds and generations, the urban plan should create an identity stimulating neighborhood which also connects with the urban context of the city of Aarau.
The jury praises the winning design for its clear, transparent and flexible character. Defining elements are a main urban axis leading into a central urban green space. The masterplan is laid out as a permeable network of interlinking public and private spaces. Where possible, the existing buildings are integrated in the new structure to contribute to the unique identity of the new quarter. Thanks to its openness and flexibility, the plan allows for architectural infill by different parties without losing its main conceptual idea.
The team will be responsible for the construction plan and the management of the urban construction and will be commissioned for one or more architectural projects within the development. The commission for the office tower for GastroSocial, also part of the study, was won by Schneider & Schneider Architekten from Aarau. The planning phase will start in 2012. The new quarter Torfeld Süd is estimated to be taken into use in 2015.
