The Sketchblock

ANA architects as Architects

The 4WINDEN Foundation has asked ANA architects to design a residential building for its members on the Westlandgracht. The key challenge was to find a balance between fulfilling individual preferences of the members and designing a harmonious building. The Sketchblock is a flexible residential building where the size, layout and finishing of the apartments can be adapted to the wishes of each individual member of the building group. Apartments of 50 m2 to 150 m2 and many steps in between are possible within the structure of the building. The layout of the apartments is also completely tailored to the wishes of every resident. The Sketchblock has been chosen as Best Building of the Year 2019 in the category ‘private living experience’.

Flexibility and diversity

The flexible structure of the Sketchblock facilitates different target groups. The smallest possible home is 46 m2, the largest possible home 400 m2. With that ANA responds to the enormous diversity of city dwellers and the attraction of this site for young and old, singles and families.

Facade

The principles of the Sketchblock are reflected in the facades. The facade consists of a system of concrete bands with a main grid and a sub-grid. The main grid corresponds to the bearing structure. The subgrid is used to accommodate different apartment layouts. Within de concrete grid there is an infill with either aluminium window frames or closed panels of expanded aluminium. Residents could choose their colors from a catalogue. Balconies are possible on all sides of the building. Residents could also determine the balcony’s size within certain predefined rules.

Material :

The façade grid is formed by slanted concrete composite elements. The chamfer aims to give the facade more depth and to make it less heavy. The infill of the closed parts in the concrete grid is materialized in anodised expanded aluminium panels. Three different shades are used in the overall facade image, giving each apartment its own accent. Suncreens are integrated in the windowdetailing.
