The original building had a strong identity through both its function (formerly the headquarters of the newspaper L’Union) and its architectural style, typical of the 1950s. The new facade was drawn in continuity with the urban front, profoundly marked by the city’s history. Its design was inspired by timber framed houses, presenting a reinterpretation of their style in a contemporary key, in order to avoid a pastiche. A random interplay between open and closed volumes, as well as the full height window shutters, give it a distinct movement. These slatted shutters allow the residents to benefit from the large windows while protected from the sun, as to benefit from the view, thus maintaining a direct visual connection with the life of Place de la République.
