Double Skin

Micromega Architecture & Strategies as Architects

The triplex in Psychiko seeks to create an architectural complex that functions as a singlebuilding, dominating the plot and creating an imposing front on the main façade. A key feature ofthe composition is the use of a rough palette of materials, with references to the hard textures found within the urban fabric.
Fair Faced concrete, glass panes, metal details and metal grids are the main material choices as to the exterior façade. Uncoated concrete is used in such a way as to display the characteristics of the process of its creation and the multiple forms it can adopt. It is presented in two distinct textures and two tonalities, thus highlighting its surface. The building accommodates a total of three apartments, two on the ground floor with double height in the living spaces and one floor
apartment developed on the upper level and projecting like a porch on the rear façade. The facades of the first two levels consist of large openings, while on the third level a building volume is removed, and an additional covered terrace is created.

Having as a basic compositional intention the creation of a coherent building, the concrete skin of the third level is slightly detached and on the main façade it extends and overlaps part of the second level, thus creating a double surface, from which the points where there are openings are removed. Thus, natural light is allowed to enter the interior of the building.

The apartments on the ground floor are characterized by concrete with a warmer, wood-like tone, while the geometric skin that opens up on the upper floor, with a distance that is functionally determined by the width of the bay windows and projections, is made of metal and concrete with a cooler and tonally deeper tone. In this way, a different interpretation of the material is attempted, and a game of textures, volumes and shades of light is explored. Through the selected openings, the composition exploits the views, both to the adjacent park to the west and
to the Athenian horizon with Mount Hymettus in the background to the east. Inside, natural materials have been used, such as light-colored oak and floors of textured travertine and Didima marble.
In the backyard a linear pool is placed with pergolas on either side of it.
