Winner of an international competition (with Isozaki, Hadid, Gregotti etc. as fellow competitors). The 500 seat theatre along with a small hall, restaurant, bar, bookshop and gallery form an intrinsic element of the redevelopment of the large Market Square. Progression of spaces and procession from Lake Maggiore via a series of smaller squares generated a key axis. Glancing past the Trade Union House (of local political significance) gallery) and rising gently as a series of steps leading to the theatre, restaurant and bar. The whole complex is to be a social gathering place – and not just at show times. Thus the relation of the bars and outdoor terraces (which also act as an open-air theatre) to the square becomes highly considered. The building is under design development.
