On a beautiful spot in the river Waal in Nijmegen, a family owns a water-plot that offers good views on the surrounding landscape. In order to replace their old, existing floating house, they ask for a design for a new floating house that has to fit in the unique landscape, offers views in all directions, is flexible and should look like a whale.
view The local regulations allow a volume of 2 stories. The lower floor contains the private rooms as bedrooms and bathrooms. In this way, the top floor can become an open and flexible platform- like space that offers a free view to all sides of the boat. “glass wrap” The top level is “wrapped” by a horizontal and round going glass facade that varies in shape and size. This “glass wrap” offers both panoramas, sneaky views and enclosures. In the main space, a central and multicolored piece of furniture subdivides the space in different subspaces. context On the south side, the volume has the same height as the water house next door. Because the villa has a free view on the north side of the plot, the roof ends higher here. At the same time, this is an ending gesture to the row of water houses.
