The MUJI Plain House (Yo no IE) is a one-storied house developed to cope with diverse ways of living. It can accommodate a wide range of generations and provide more choices for places to live, thus supporting a variety of lifestyles in an era where major changes in lifestyles – such as declining birthrate, the aging of population, and the reform of work style – are taking place.
With the theme of “connecting with the garden, connecting with the family”, the design focuses on the connection with the garden – a feature that can be made possible by a one-storied house. Through a large opening, we propose a new way of living; that inhabitants can take their inside business out to the garden, such as having a pleasant breakfast under a tree.
In addition, there is no fixed dividers or separators in the entire space, so that inhabitants can easily change the layout on their own according to their needs or lifestyle changes.
