When a literary work is translated into another language, the use of the correct vocabulary and grammar is merely a technical requirement. However, in order for the work to be grasped in its true essence in the new language, it requires the coherent rendering of meaning and atmosphere. Architecture is not a language, but it also has a vocabulary, a grammar and a syntax. Architecture has the ability to communicate: with place, with time, with people. Like the literary work, architecture comes into being only through translation - through the conceptual design that manages to bring together the individual components - vocabulary, grammar, syntax - into a holistic language. The profession of an architect should be that of a generalist who knows how to guide all the issues of content and all those involved in the process and bring them together into a whole. This is a demanding and responsible task that requires, in addition to a high capacity for abstraction and a serious awareness of the cultural context, especially a deep sense of space, its proportions and its materiality. Then architecture begins to speak and only then the step from building to architectural art does succeed.
