On a sloping site in the Austrian ski resort of Alpe Furx, this holiday and leisure development by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten comprises twelve chalets integrated with their context and a new hospitality building replacing an old hotel.
Key concepts during the design process included a respectful treatment of ground and grade, high amenity values, and a thoughtful relationship between the structures themselves. The resulting site plan features is a small development with three groups of four chalet buildings arranged in a naturalistic manner.
To preserve views of the mountain and the nearby chapel, the main hospitality building is located below the chalets. Containing a restaurant with an expansive sundeck, clear vistas are offered over the Alpine landscape.
Each chalet includes a bedroom, open living/dining space with a kitchen, wood-burning stove, sauna, and an outdoor hot tub.
Throughout the project, wood is specified both indoors and out. The two-story wooden chalets are clad with larch shingles on their exterior while inside, the entire shell is clad in a light silver fir that presents warm contrast to the exterior. Furniture is designed in black-stained ash and maple.
The main building and restaurant replicate these materials with a silver-fir interior, solid concrete core with black, trowel-applied finish, and furnishings in maple and black stained ash.
