&tradition launches MASS LIGHT a marble pendant designed by NORM.architects

The Danish design company &tradition is launching MASS LIGHT; a marble pendant designed by NORM. architechts comprised of Kasper Rønn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen.

”The shape and composition of MASS LIGHT is inspired by street lamps seen in big cities around the world. We have seen variations of that particular shape in Paris, Barcelona and New York.” Says NORM. “It reminds us of a head with a hat; a cast iron top and a semi transparent glass sphere in the bottom.” They continue.

MASS LIGHT is a marble pendant, which consists of a etched-opal glass mounted on a brown marble lampholder. The pendant can be used individually or as a chandilier in a larger lighting installation.

NORM.architects aim to work with natural materials in their product design as these materials become more and more beautiful over time. This was also the starting point for MASS LIGHT; to design a pendant, where the raw marble lampholder meets the acid-etched opal glass diffuser. The contrast between the two materials makes the lamp iconic and sculptural.

NORM.architechts explain: “The shape of MASS LIGHT is very bold, strong and masculine. But at the same time we have integrated feminine curves to soften the expression. The simple and well-known shape lets you focus on the beauty of the marble in itself, its organic structures and brown colours. This way we try to balance the visual, the tactile and the sensual to create an unusual, but harmonious experience.”

NORM.architects have previously designed RAFT TABLE, RAFT STOOL, RAFT BAR STOOL and MILK LAMP in cooperation with &tradition. The MASS LIGHT will become part of &tradition’s great collection of designer lamps, which also counts in the BELLEVUE lamp by Arne Jacobsen, the FLOWERPOT series by Verner Panton and the TRASH ME lamp designed by Victor Vetterlein, as well as many other.
