With an existing building on a beautiful site near Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, the Pear Point owner approached PBW to address the building’s connection to the site while configuring the interior spaces for their specific use. Working within the angled geometry of the existing structure, additional windows were added to open views across the water to the south end of San Juan Island and Lopez Island. New sliding doors now connect the living room to the deck, allowing the sounds of nearby Griffin Bay to permeate the house, where a nearby rip current runs over rocks like a river.
The interiors were completely revamped to match the client’s lifestyle and update the aesthetic, removing a barrel vault along the way. Interior walls were removed to allow the spaces to flow together and provide better natural lighting.
A simple palette of white oak casework and reclaimed wood floors creates a warm interior. New steel detailing was added to existing stonework to breathe new life into existing portions of the house. A new custom wood entry door, built by island artisans, provides a breathtaking first impression. As with many residential remodel projects, working with the constraints and opportunities presented by the existing structure resulted in a project that is truly one of a kind.
